I like the spirit and thrust, and particularly the emphasis on human choice, but where I part company with Reid Hoffman and similarly minded humanists in Silicon Valley is the focus. Technologists designing technology (and those who employ them) should not be deciding what people value; they should be deciding how to create technologies that serve what people value.
We should be deciding what people value. All of us. And no, adding government as a sort of peripheral advisor or monitor is no substitute. We need conscious, deliberate, informed debates and choices made in democratic forums.
We have seen the alternative in social media. I wish we wouldn’t make the same mistake with AI.
