China cries foul, but nobody’s listening. It’s been a cheater for decades. It has been fiercely protectionist and subsidizes its exports. It imposes restrictions, taxes, or ownership requirements on foreign investors. But now China has gone too far by creating a gigantic shadow trading system with Russia and Mexican gangsters. It will also be punished, along with India to a lesser extent, for buying Russian fossil fuels. To date, India’s escaped the wrath of the West because of good will toward the democracy. But its normally astute Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a costly blunder when he snubbed an invitation to the NATO 75th anniversary summit this month and met instead in Moscow with Vladimir Putin. He even gave him a hug on the day that Putin bombed a children’s hospital in Ukraine.
