’s excellent piece also happens to use a specific turn of phrase that brings to mind the insanity of actions set into motion 24 years ago by a madman:
In the wake of the 9/11 attacks, which rightly horrified the world and strengthened alliances (in sharp contrast to what we see today), brought out its fair share of crazies too, including those who used tortured “reasoning” to link Bin Laden’s actions to Nostradamus’ “prophecies” — ‘something something an ash bin laden with something’.
But now it appears that Bin Laden may have been the prophet: he vowed to destroy the US evil empire, and look at where we are now: the echoes of post-9/11 authoritarianism (DHS, militant anti-Islamic actions, nativism) were fertile ground for Trump’s rise (and the Democrat’s near-total capitulation to Republican-led anti-American policies), and now America stands apart from its post-WWII allies, and shoulder to shoulder with oligarchs & corrupt authoritarian strongmen like Putin, Orban, Netanyahu, Erdogan, MbS, and even Kim Jong-Un!).
Surely Bin Laden would be satisfied with what his unparalleled acts of terror unleashed.
