I think studying China can be helpful, and also dangerous. On the one hand, many big trends / business models started in China and then moved West. For instance, TikTok was proven out with Douyin, before Bytedance brought it outside China. Same for Pinduoduo and Temu.
The danger is that the Chinese consumer differs in some ways to the Western consumer. For one example, China largely leapfrogged desktop and is more mobile-centric than the US. There are different cultural norms that make markets like livestream commerce & social commerce / group-buying more prevalent. We can learn from studying Chinese tech / business, but should also appreciate that the two consumer bases are very different in some key ways.
