Culturally-Responsive Teaching was the first to rebrand, now enabled through screeds that all teaching must be “relevant” and “engaging” to the student. Diversity was the first of the DEI brand to transform. It’s now called “belonging.” Inclusion—arguably the least abused of the DEI acronym—lingered longer but has faded to the benign “all students” (which is fine so long as this doesn’t mean repeatedly-disruptive or violent students get to continue to undermine the education of their peers). Equity held on the longest, mainly because most people of naive goodwill just meant they wanted the lower kids to catch up (in reality, equity was also stunting the growth of high-performing students in the name of “closing gaps”).
