My friend Ivana Greco is 100% right about the importance of family dinners, so I wanted to crowdsource some answers to one of my own questions about it: How do you prevent yourself from being too exhausted to be nice at dinnertime?
My biggest obstacle to enjoying family dinners is that both my husband and I are really worn out by this time of day and it’s hard for us to lead the conversation, remain patient, etc. Our kids’ energy goes up at this time of day, while ours is way down — especially mine, after having pushed myself to cook dinner during the witching hour! (My kids are 6-14.) And yes, I do sometimes prep dinner ahead — it helps, but I’m still wiped out and find it really challenging to stay engaged and positive during dinnertime. And I do want to do dinners, not switch it out for a different mealtime or something.
