While hiking in NE Canada last fall we discovered tuckamore. A Newfoundland term, these are stunted and gnarled balsam and spruce forests. They exist near the Atlantic shores, high on exposed cliffs, bent by the constant wind and salt air. These are the tiniest of forests at most 10 feet high. Mostly, they’re inaccessible worlds. If you peer in you expect to see fairies flying about, and perhaps a troll crouched deep within. In reality they’re perfect shelter for birds and other wildlife, sometimes heard, rarely seen. Here are two photos of more “accessible” tuckamores. Most were shorter and more gnarled, such that one gazes downward upon their canopies.
