I cannot take substack seriously as a place for writing or writers because its archival capacity is laughable. Not only is the search function completely confused, I can’t access saved posts nor organize them in any way. A feed is not the same as literature or a library. Writers and storytellers are often archivists, embedded in time, weaving the past, building out the future. Oral and written works of language are in conversation with everything that came before, and speak to those who will come after. Substack and everything like it, enslaves us to the perpetual ahistorical present of attention-commerce, of temporal displacement and extraction. Confusion makes it easier to lie to us about history and reality.
