This bifurcating of love and theology always gets me.

Any act of love always flows from my theology; what I believe about God directly informs my actions in the world. You cannot separate the two in this way. The Bible certainly doesn’t.

Encouraging someone to “choose love” over theology creates a false binary by treating doctrine as a matter of personal preference. It minimizes the role theology should hold in the life of believer, when it ought to be the guardrails that help us make sense of our world.

We should love others because of our theology, not in spite of it. Absent additional qualification, setting it up as an either-or makes this really dangerous advice.

I’m going to prioritize love.

Above dogma and debates.

Above theology and ideology.

I’m going to prioritize love.

Because Jesus didn’t say his followers would be known by our beliefs.

Jesus said we’d be known by our love.
