Right now I have the sense that many USAians opposed to the current federal executive in that country consider themselves to be living in “America As Run By MAGA”, and that this too will pass, and that history will one day write its judgment, and it will pass condemnation on Trump and all of those around him.
If this describes you, then I invite you to consider the following:
We say “Nazi Germany”, not “Germany As Run By Nazis”.
We say “Fascist Italy”, not “Italy As Run By Fascists”.
We say “Francoist Spain”, not “Spain As Run By Franco”.
We say “Communist Russia”, not “Russia As Run By Communists”. (Ditto China and Cuba, and the Warsaw Pact, and so on.)
We say “Vichy France”, not “France As Run By Nazi Collaborators At Vichy” (or “Pétainist France”, not “France As Run By Pétain”).
History regards the active resistance movements kindly, but they were a tiny fraction of the population. It regards the leaders of those regimes poorly. But as for those who neither led nor resisted, to the extent history passes a judgment on them, that judgment is generally negative.
You do not live in “America As Run By MAGA”. You live in MAGA America. And history will not remember kindly those who lulled themselves into thinking that it’s just “America As Run By MAGA”.
