In French Cameroon, fathers were often eager to sell their daughters to much older men in order to secure a higher bride wealth. Colonial authorities were often dismayed, but often stayed silent for fear of upsetting rural authorities. Far more transformative were African Christian leaders who preached a message of romantic love and happy marriage!!!
