Simone de Beauvoir, MacKinnon and Dworkin all saw romantic love as patriarchy’s handmaiden, fooling women into domestic drudgery and sacrifice, effectively enabling what I call ‘patriarchal rents’. And that’s certainly possible, people can sacrifice due to devotion. However, these Western feminist overlooked the reality that their own culture of female choice increased the likelihood of women finding men that would love them, and prioritise their wants and welfare, seeking emotional companionship and being committed to their children. That has been a unique engine of gender equality.
