We wrap up our collaboration with SFMOMA/ASAWA Family today with a deep dive into Ruth Asawa’s work as a community advocate, her public art and how Ruth’s identity and experience as a Japanese-American (including being interned during the war) informed her practice. It’s a super special piece, deeply researched and written by the Grown-Ups Table incredible editor Candace Chen (yay Candace!!)
Later this Summer, GUT members are invited to gather IN PERSON for a LIVE Ruth-related drawing event at SFMOMA. Subscribe if you want to join me IRL and draw our way into a more hopeful world together. ❤️✏️
A big thanks to the Asawa family and SFMOMA for this collaboration. It has been so meaningful and helpful to focus deeply on Ruth’s work right now. She really is a model for how artists can respond to injustice in helpful, concrete, impactful ways. If you missed the essay on her flowers drawings or the interview with Ruth’s grandson Henry, check them out on my homepage here: Wendy MacNaughton
