It occurs to me that gerrymandering may not be merely another ugly feature of our broken politics, but one of the ingredients in the next phase of the rupture itself. Perhaps that sounds too dramatic, and perhaps it is, but the escalation logic is not difficult to see once the map becomes the battlefield. In Pape (escalationtrap.substack… and Mearsheimer (mearsheimer.substack.comlanguage, Iran and Trump cannot afford to lose because each experiences defeat as existential; surrender therefore becomes nearly impossible. Domestically, we have our own version of this same trap. One America believes the woke radical left is coming to destroy the country, corrupt the children, and turn everything into some socialist nightmare; the other sees weaponized racial grievance, oligarch puppet masters, and an authoritarian movement eating the republic from the inside. By the way, I know which side I’m on. But the point here is not even which description is more true. The point is that when both sides experience the other as an existential threat, then every court case, every district line, every county board, every rural/urban fracture becomes another rung on the ladder. And ladders, once climbed, have a way of asking for the next step. So maybe the fear is not that the ballot box simply fails. Maybe the fear is that, little by little, precinct by precinct, county by county, it is replaced by the bullet box.
