Home is such a heavy four letter word. And used with so much care and caution. It means so many things and different things to the same person at various points in time. In this essay Natasha gives us much to ponder over. What is home? Where is home? These are questions which have nagged me always and closely linked to a sense of self. Before Substack (Twitter) X was where I expressed myself even if in fewer words. There was a beautiful exchange on Home with Sayantan Ghosh (@sayantansunnyg) some of which I share below. “Home isn't a place or a building; home is where change never attempts to intimidate us, and where we keep returning to without having to keep up with the world.” And this definition by Pico Iyer is one I have held close “ Home is, in the end, not just the place where you sleep, but the place where you stand”. And

somewhere else wrote "Home as a place where you return to rest. Where you can act out your anxieties and express pent-up feelings safely. Where you can explore the multiple ideas of who you may be. Where you can make a mess and own it. Where you can rebel and despair. Be depressed, and then recover. Create art, music and other useless things without judgment. Where you are not weighed down by ever-changing expectations that you can never meet." Yesterday sitting in the car with the good doctor and the lawyer I said to them “This is my world! Perhaps I could have said “This is my home.” I will be an empty nester in a few hours again even if I have a home that has more persons than rooms. This is also Home.

When did you last go home?
Home is where Mum waits for you. Home is where Mum waits for you to leave again.
