I wrote all about Lindy West’s new book Adult Braces, the messy bad-faith public reception that hides the books real strengths, and the struggle to create a coherent narrative self as a public figure who has written for a long time. I hope you will ignore the hot takes and read the book. I hope you’ll read this and think about the role you play in the art you consume too.

A book is a performance, but it is also a collaboration with the reader, who is asked only to follow the story, notice the unreliability, and craft an interpretation all their own. But too many of Lindy West’s readers (at least the vocal ones on social media) no longer see the act of reading as collaboratory. They approach books instead as content, and reading as a search for either validation or viral outrage.
