Make money doing the work you believe in
I don’t give a single, solitary fuck which white people historically called themselves Democrat or Republican while Black people were trying not to get killed.
Democrats. Republicans. That’s all semantics. The kind you get to argue when your children aren’t the ones hanging in the balance, when your survival isn’t being negotiated in courtrooms, hospitals, prisons, and backroom policy deals. While y’all were debating labels, we were studying who had the power to cage us, starve us, experiment on us, or bury us.
Because the constant variable in our danger has been white people. White people wrote the laws. White people enforced the laws. White people decided when we were property, when we were criminal, when we were disposable. Democrats and Republicans attended lynchings.
We did not have the luxury of sitting around studying white political branding while our lives were on the line. Our history in this country has been survival, moment to moment, generation to generation, under white power, no matter what name it was using at the time.
So no, we didn’t have time for the luxury question of “Which one of y’all is safe?”
Quit pretending like white supremacy isn’t bipartisan in practice. You had Northern whites who opposed slavery expansion but still believed in Black inferiority. You had abolitionists who still didn’t support full social equality.
You had Reconstruction efforts followed by national abandonment of Black citizens. You had federal troops protecting Black voting rights and then federal withdrawal that allowed terror to take over. You had civil rights laws passed and then decades of white backlash across multiple political spaces.
When your reality is life or death, you don’t debate party labels. You study patterns.
And the pattern taught us that our safety has never been guaranteed by which white people were in charge.
So miss me with this “But the Democrats did this in 1860!” or “But Republicans did that in 1960!”
