Trump has resurrected everything bad from our past: the rise of the Robber Barons, nepotism and the spoils system, internment camps, the rise of fascism in the 1930’s, racism and restricted rights for women. He has also looked at world history to find its worst practices: Mercantilism, an economic practice from the 16th to the 18th centuries of using trade protection (e.g., tariffs and other trade barriers) as a form of economic warfare. Mercantilism was thoroughly debunked by Adam Smith in the 18th century. His book, “The Wealth of Nations” gave rise to modern economics, something they apparently don’t teach at Wharton. Now he has rediscovered Imperialism. What wonders await us? As my European friends are saying, “Canada and Mexico border on stupidity.”
