When I lived out in the Pacific Northwest after graduating from Iowa State University with a degree in horticulture (the plants won!), I became enamored with the diverse landscapes from the ocean to the mountains to the high desert beyond. So much so that I took a hike as many weekends as I had the energy to do so, whether I could find a hiking companion, or not.
