A substantive introduction and empirical illustration of demoralization, specifically exploring whether it constitutes moral progress. Demoralization is the process by which a practice ceases to be subject to moral assessment. Cyril analyzed a Pew Survey asking people to categorize issues as “Morally acceptable,” “Morally unacceptable,” or “Not a moral issue.” Over the past decade, France has undergone moralization, while the US has moved in the opposite direction. These patterns are fascinating, although their causes are difficult to pin down.
