Perhaps it’s time that those of us who choose to give voice to wildlands and wildlife officially step away from the so-called mainstream “conservation” movement? While it’s certainly had some successes and many well-meaning individuals, overall it—particularly well-funded and influential “Big Green”—has become mostly greenwash of extraction, promotion of the myth of endless growth, and defense of the impossible status quo. Now, get this, more and more of Big Green is actively attacking those of us grassroots who are ACTUALLY doing their job for them on less than 1 percent of their budget. While we can certainly still find overlap, perhaps it’s time to part ways?
