One of the privileges that I have as a consultant is being a witness to significant moments of change in organizations, and by extension, people's lives.
Such was the project I did with Dan McCabe at Dayton Power and Light two decades ago.
Simple project. Write a values statement for the company after a long season of disappointment and misguided leadership.
Dan and I tell this story.
It is the first place where I saw "a persistent, residual culture of values that persists because it resides in the relationships of the people."
The values implementation process was transformative. Two years later, recognition came to the company as one of the 100 most trustworthy companies in the nation. It was not simply testimony to the process but rather to the people of DPL themselves.
If you doubt that change is possible, this story may change your mind. I hope so.
