The Gift of Not Knowing and True Humility
In my recent interview with Dr. Catriona Wallace for the Land Stewards Alliance I was reminded of the power of humility. The ability to sit in "I don’t know."
For so long, our culture has conditioned us to believe that knowing—having the answers, being the expert, leading with certainty—is the goal. But what if the real wisdom lies in the unknowing?
Ronit Herzfeld from Leap Forward (leapforward.us)put it beautifully by reminding me that it’s a yummy place to play—it takes the pressure off. And she’s right. When we release the need to always be right, we make space for something new.
As Dr. Wallace shared, the ego—especially the entrepreneurial one—craves success, recognition, and validation. But true innovation, true transformation, only happens when we dissolve that self-importance and sit in the void.
The moment we surrender to "I am nobody, and I know nothing," we can finally ask the right questions:
✨ What is truly needed of me?
✨ How can I serve?
✨ Where have I been holding on too tightly?
This is the kind of surrender that allows us to move beyond outdated solutions and step into new ways of being. And in a world that desperately needs fresh thinking, maybe the greatest skill we can cultivate is humility.
Where in your life can you practice not knowing today?
