I think having a spiritual, daily practice was essential for me. Even in the early years, with small children, I forced myself to swim and meditate everyday. I started meditating at 19. This, I believe, has been my salvation. It helped me to work with difficult people on some difficult projects. It helped me to visualize and dialogue with myself about difficult situations, like firing someone. It’s not an easy thing to do with grace, but that’s always my goal. I would use the rhythm of swimming laps to mull things over until I found possible solutions, using the flow of the water to calm my nervous system so I could have clarity.
