Make money doing the work you believe in

Chips labelled with words like “vege” or “vegetable” often sound healthier, but that can be misleading. For example, the “health food” chips pictured on the left are made from sweet potatoes, yet they’re still deep-fried, salted, and flavoured with additives. In contrast, the regular chips on the right are still made from potatoes and only have vegetable oil, and salt as additions, so fewer added ingredients. They’re also much cheaper, and you get nearly twice as much in a packet.

Nutritionally, the health chips on the left are very similar to regular chips in terms of energy and fat content, despite being marketed as “natural” and "vegan". The “less than 105 calories per serve” claim also needs context — a serve is just 20 grams, or about a small handful. The regular chips have roughly the same calories per serve.Ultimately, “health” chips and regular potato chips often share almost identical nutritional profiles. The difference lies more in marketing and perception than in composition.I still love these vege chips! There’s nothing wrong with them. It’s just interesting to see how often the supposed health benefits come down to clever branding rather than actual nutrition ❤️
