Make money doing the work you believe in

As in life, so in writing. I wonder if some of what many of us perceive as a reflex away from interiority is actually because writers, too, have a habit putting down characters’ round-and-round kinds of worrying that doesn’t go anywhere.

Even if your characters DO actually do this very usual and human thing, the writer has to find a way to convey the character’s feeling of being stuck in a preparing-but-not-really loop, while actually keeping the story moving, however small the steps.

Note to self: Worry has a habit of disguising itself as preparation. It feels like doing something useful, when often it’s just going over the same ground again and again. Preparation moves you forward; worry mostly walks you in circles. Sometimes the best preparation is the next small step. Sigh.
