By now, you might have heard that The Guardian has a list of the 20 best Cocteau Twins songs. My entry point was Ivo and Pandora, which appeared on a Canadian double LP sampler of “Vertigo” artists (in the Great White North, that was the label that had a lot of PolyGram/Phonogram artists). It was wild to hear a band create such vivid and evocative and emotional music and do it with lyrics that were random or maybe an invented language. And yet, it seemed right. Dream logic for dream pop that presaged shoegaze and 90s alt rock. But sweeter. Gauzier. It was some of the first real alternative music i heard then, i mean the kind that only got space on campus radio, which i could barely tune in where i lived. Some times, loss leaders lead you in the right direction.
