I always say that Laura Nyro changed the game so completely that it is easily overlooked. Mainly because she didn’t have the hits. But others did. Meanwhile, she mixed up genres with more elan and grace than anyone before her and many who came after her. This one, Eli, is the start of what is considered her great trilogy, but that ignores the debut and the grand gesture to her influences. It is peerless song writing, but more than that it all sounds so effortless, however many pivots she makes. And there are many. I do wonder what she has been drinking. And where I can get it. But this is intoxicating enough. And then some.
