When I was a small child, I used to love going over one of my friend’s houses. Not because she had cool toys, but because there were strange shadows of cats that would run along her walls, even when their cat was outside. I loved those ghosty cat shadows. It was so cool!
At some point, I stopped seeing them, probably around the same time the grown ups were trying to teach me to be practical. It wasn’t until a couple decades later, when I started learning about mystical things, that I remembered the shadow kitties. And I was like—Oh! Cool! And I reclaimed the feeling of wonder around the strange and mystical.
I don’t see ghosts now, but I do love delving into everyday magic—visualizations, tarot cards, fantasy novels, and all the good things. I let my inner child out to play in the realms of magic, because this is what she has always loved. And nowadays what I love is gifting her all the wonder she was denied as she grew older.
How about you? What wondrous parts of your childhood are you reclaiming now as an adult?
