This is a good read from Alex Rollins Berg and I sign off on the idea that contenders for Best Picture shouldn’t be using box office as any sort of metric to determine the winner.
But I would offer the corollary that my main frustration is that far too many critics and cultural commentators use the opposite heuristic that “popular does not equal” quality, as if making blockbusters is easy! It isn’t! Just ask two very talented filmmakers like Chloe Zhao and Nia DeCosta.
Movies that make lots and lots of money also have the potential to be great! They also deserve recognition.
