Sigh, I was using em-dashes way before they were cool, and now LLMs are ruining them.
I wanted to add one note that I didn’t include in the article: the most puzzling thing to me (really, my editor/researcher, a punctuation junkie) is that LLMs mostly use em-dashes instead of semicolons. I almost exclusively use em-dashes to include asides that are too long for commas and too short for parentheses.
