I want to make a quick box office prediction. Not “guaranteed”, but say more likely than not chance that in four weeks, we’ll have a slew of headlines bemoaning the state of the box office.
- I envision Masters of the Universe (already happened), Disclosure Day and Supergirl underperforming, leading to headlines about a down June.
- This could result in headlines that “IP is dead” or “blockbusters are dead”.
- Then we’ll see two kids films smash (Toy Story 5 and Minions and Monsters), leading to “is the box office just kids films and horror?” takes.
- Then by the start of August, after Spider-Man and The Odyssey smash, we’ll be back to, “Hollywood is back baby!”
Personally, I’m rooting for an “All of the above” box office return to glory: blockbusters/IP getting it done, along with breakout hits and original/new stories. Theaters need both.
