I just re-read Plato’s Apology for the eighty zillionth time, prepping for class. Boy do I love that text. It’s probably the reason I ended up as a philosopher.
I’ve said for decades that someone should turn it into a screenplay and cast Paul Giamatti as Socrates. I tell students every year that if they ever end up in Hollywood…
Then that thought snapped together with another I’ve had, which is that I have no idea what I could possibly do for my next sabbatical (which isn’t for five more years) and realized—maybe I could write the screenplay! Or at least a play that could be performed here at my university (much more likely).
I am SO excited about this idea. It’ll take a ton of work to learn about writing plays and doing historical research and so on, but how cool would it be to put that together if I can pull it off?
