So rad to meet Scott Ian today at The Punk Rock Museum! As a young girl, Anthrax was one of the bands that spurred my love for metal music and they remain one of my favorites to this day, seeing them live multiple times over the years. I always dug and have been impressed by Scott’s passion, dedication, and humble attitude—it inspires me…

Took an unplanned & unexpected break from the newsletter but I’m roaring back this week with some ‘50s jazz gems like The Modern Jazz Quartet at Music Inn, which also features one of my favorite covert art tropes (group at repose in nature).

If the Trump administration truly cared about the real problem of antisemitism (and not just as a ruse to bludgeon universities to curb academic freedom) how about starting by condemning the violence against PA Governor Shapiro and his family on Passover.

Tomorrow, instead of the usual interview, I’ll be sharing a meditation on the suffering and death of Our Lord—featuring the profound insights of St. Thomas Aquinas. It’s Holy Week, and I hope this helps you draw closer to Christ.
If you asked me five years ago what I thought about Afghanistan
I would have said “I’m sorry I don’t know anything about Afghanistan, I have no opinion.”
The fact is in the last Trump administration reporting on the war in Afghanistan was greatly reduced. The administration indicated that secrecy was essential to carr…

Thank you! The book isn’t about “how do we use LLMs” or something surface like that. It’s a deep dive into this idea that we’re at a historical inflection point with what we call “AI” in our increasingly perplexing world. We need a new way of thinking about AI, so we need to understand how we got here, what’s really going on, the nature of human inference and the limits of machine inference, and how best to put together a plausible worldview that enables human flourishing. As I keep saying LLMs…
Congratulations Erik, I wish you good outcomes. It’s an area striking fear in the core of humanity…. The more thinking and discussion the better. So many ‘advances’ get absorbed by ‘bubble of logic’ self serving commercial interests before we think through the broader consequences.
Great! Can’t wait to read this Erik. I really hope the tech industry stops pretending machines are intelligent and flogging substandard products to us, and instead starts paying more attention to the machines we really need.
Creating AI to work for “us” is nothing to do with electronic technology and everything to do with perverse capitalist incentives. It can never be smarter than the “alignment” “experts” with their fingers on the scale. For instance, AI agents are only as useful as they are able to be trusted with your secrets, and black box programs tweaked to maximize corporate interests above your own can never be trustworthy.
There’s no better reason! I’m also happy to be on Substack. In a world infected by extremism, this is the best platform for a normal exchange of views between people interested in thoughtful conversation and debate as opposed to fixed outcomes.
