I just hit 5 years at Airbnb! My longest tenure and easily the best job I’ve ever had. I've had 4 different managers and been on 3 different teams across 2 orgs.
I’m still learning every year, still finding gaps, and still excited for what’s ahead.
A few technical highlights from the journey:
• 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟭-𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮: Built a core component of Airbnb’s 3rd ever revenue-generating product: 𝗚𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲. My sequencer reliably processed every single policy for the first few years.
• 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯: Built a hackathon project that didn’t win, but later became a funded project and one of Airbnb’s first production LLM use cases and first project as part of a newly formed team.
• 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰: Worked on an LLM vision model side project that became a funded initiative and one of Airbnb's first production use cases with VLMs the following year.
• 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱: Built a prototype that expanded on the earlier LLM work and tied it into a broader platform. It got leadership support, became a funded project, and is now my main focus in 2026.
During this time I also participated in initiatives outside my team:
• 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟭–𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱: Served on a sub committee of the Tech Diversity Council, using work hours to help brainstorm and support initiatives that improved diversity and belonging at Airbnb.
• 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮 and 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲: Served on the Question Bank Committee, helping update our interview practices and make questions more practical.
• 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱: Served on the AI Champions Committee, to educate and promote the usage of LLMs at Airbnb
• 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱: A non profit I founded called algorythm.org to help black engineers with interview prep and career growth grew from 2k to 20k members was formally accepted as a recruiting partner with the Airbnb Connect Program
I've received a Critical Talent award and Exceed expectations performance ratings for 4 out of 5 years.
I have tons of support and encouragement towards a promotion to Staff Engineer. That is my next goal. Looking forward to replacing that Senior chain in my profile picture!
