In these moments I just love AI <3

- explanation -

I've been using spaced repetition — specifically a free flashcard app called Anki — to memorize things like the world's greatest works of art.

The idea is that instead of reviewing everything every day, an algorithm shows you each card right around the moment you're about to forget it. It's the most efficient way to move something from short-term to long-term memory.

But even with a good system, some names just won't stick. I kept failing the same card: the artist behind an extraordinary Chinese scroll painting.

I could picture the work perfectly — the river, the bridge, the teeming city — but the name slipped away every time.

So I asked Gemini for help building a mnemonic, which is a fancy term for a mental shortcut that links new information to something already in your head.

Because I'm German, the AI bridged the gap between the artist's name, Zhang Zeduan, and words that already live in my language:

  • Zhang sounds like Zange (pliers).

  • Zeduan sounds like Zeh (toe) + du (you).

Then it generated a visual to lock it in: a pair of pliers grabbing a toe, with a big bold DU pointing right at me.

It's absurd. It's specific. And because it's so weird, I'll probably never forget his name again.

This is what I mean when I say AI is a creative partner for learning. It does not replace the work of memorization, but giving me exactly the kind of strange, personal hook that makes the work stick.
