When Harriet Beecher Stowe met Abraham Lincoln during the war, he reportedly greeted her by saying, “So you’re the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war.” By the time the war broke out, over a million copies of Uncle Tom’s Cabin had been sold. It had outsold every book in America except the Bible. Stowe had set the country on fire with a window into the daily terror of chattel slavery.
