On May 24, 1973, President Richard Nixon received Navy Lieutenant Commander John McCain and other American prisoners of war at the White House, following McCain's return home after five years of captivity in North Vietnam.
During his imprisonment, McCain, the son of a prominent Navy admiral, refused early release offered by his captors, choosing to remain with his fellow prisoners until all could be freed together.
