The app for independent voices

None of this is really a mystery… nor is the problem new. About a decade ago, I gave a Tedx talk at NEIU in which I suggested — as have many others — that if we taught math and science the same way that we teach sports or dance, for instance, we would be equally as successful as we are in those disciplines. The reason, of course, is that acquiring the ability to process information follows the same (biological) processes irrespective of the activity. You get better at tennis by repeatedly practicing. You get good at math by repeatedly practicing. It's all physiology. And, in both cases, it requires — or, at least, is enhanced by — a caring, mentor who provides honest feedback. After four decades of teaching (special ed, high school students, and as a university professor), I'm convinced that the solution is simple and commonsensical but beyond the reach of the educational system as it currently exists. I sincerely hope it does change but I am not sure that it will. Sincerely, Frederick
