Laws (of God, of the land, of nature) that admit of no exception erase the exceptional. The church, the school, the laboratory, the ballot box and, now that these institutions have coalesced into one, the screen, demand humility, passivity and surrender before the abstract, the general and the normal (usually under the cover of peaceable ‘humility’). Thus man is reduced and reduced to nothing, or nothing but a bag of identities which the law-giver gives man to compensate for his lost essence.
