“They certainly shouldn’t stop trying to improve peoples’ lives, but they have to be willing to pick some fights while doing so. One technique they could use much more effectively is to go after individuals or companies whose behaviour justify their policies. For instance, they could use the mass evictions by Asif Aziz’s Criterion Capital to highlight policies to protect renters. Or go hard at named companies that have used fire and rehire to harm employees to explain the benefits of workers’ rights legislation. Even policies that aren’t primarily about cost of living can be defined against an economic enemy to help make them more concrete. For instance, when announcing their special needs reforms ministers could have focused more on criticising private equity firms taking advantage of a shortage of special schools to make big profits.”
