Cole carries momentum, history into Colonial.

Eric Cole shot a 63 on Saturday, with a seven under that’s the low round of the week.Cole’s round was built on the best approach play of any round by any player at this tournament. His strokes gained tee-to-green for three rounds is 8.130, fourth in the field. The ball has been finding the right spots. He leads by one over Ryan Gerard, two over J.J. Spaun and Mac Meissner.

But here’s is the other thing that is true about Eric Cole: he has been here before, and he hasn’t won.

Five times in his career Cole has held solo second or better after 54 holes. Five times he has come out of Sunday not holding the trophy. He finished solo 2nd, T2, T3, T7, and 5th. The most recent was a 68 that wasn’t quite enough at the 2025 Sony Open. None of them ended with a trophy.

That history doesn’t mean Sunday goes the same way. The ball-striking that produced Saturday’s 63 is real, and this wasn’t a putter-driven round that evaporates when conditions change. The approach play has been the best in the field all week. His proximity to the hole (25’5”) is second among players who made the cut.

But two back is Spaun, who won in Texas weeks ago and whose model profile going into final rounds is the strongest of anyone on the leaderboard. Three back is Henley, whose approach game has been excellent all week and who leads the Tour in scrambling. The course has tightened — the full-course scoring average flipped from 1.2 strokes under par in Round 1 to 1.2 strokes over par in Round 3, driven by a back nine that got significantly harder as the wind built.

Cole earned his lead going into Sunday. Whether he’ll hold it is the question the data won’t answer yet.
