Time to make preparations.

Between all the various viruses around (influenza, RSV, Covid, and avian flu) and the determination of the current administration (I did not vote for them) to wreck the economy, it’s a good idea to prepare.

How? Here are 10 suggestions— because no one really knows what’s going to come down on us—that I hope help.

  1. First aid items. Aspirin, acetaminophen, cough syrup, Band-Aids, ace bandage, etc. Find a book on first aid that you can do yourself at home. Make sure you have the supplies needed.

  2. Personal hygiene. Toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, pads, tampons, soap, lotion.

  3. Alternate methods of birth control. Condoms, anything else you can get hold of.

  4. Essential household items. Toilet paper, cleaning supplies/disinfectant, batteries, manual can opener, radio, flashlight, duct tape, basic tools, cooking basics, have an alternate method of being able to cook without electricity.

  5. Put in a garden, but recognize that you are not going to be able to grow all of your food. Line up your sources for reliable food supplies.

  6. Reduce your living expenses as much as possible. The economy is going to be a mess. Talk with everyone in your household and explain that you need their help to reduce expenses.

  7. Stock your pantry with foods that you will be glad to have a year or 2 from now, whether canned or dried, flour, sugar.

  8. Check your local library for resources that are available there. Check now while you still have a library.

  9. Make a directory of names, addresses, and phone numbers of people who will be helpful in case of an emergency. Have it written down somewhere other than on your phone or computer.

  10. Know how to purify water. Assemble any supplies that you need to do that.

Not trying to be an alarmist. Keep calling your members of Congress. Every day there is more news that shows the greater damage is yet to come. We the people must take care of ourselves.
