Large cities like Los Angeles and London don't invent new forms of music but refine and commercialize the success first developed elsewhere. Far from the eyes and ears of the music industry, most of the music of the last 50 years was pioneered on the island nation of Jamaica, where dub, reggae, and the first samples were created by freaks like Lee Scratch Perry. These sounds were then imported to places like New York, London, Los Angeles, and Detroit, where they led to the refinement of rap, techno, and modern pop music.
