We often explain someone’s success by saying “they just worked harder.”

That explanation sounds reasonable, but it skips an important part of the story.

Effort doesn’t come out of nowhere.

It’s usually driven by something beneath the surface: familiarity with pressure, belief in the payoff, true passion for the project, or a history of effort actually working.

I’m starting to think effort explains less than we assume, and what drives it explains more.
