So here's a big reason not to let AI take over education: my students don't know how to read anymore. We read passages from assigned books in class (because they don't read at home anyway), immediately after which I ask the person who read to give me one or two take homes from the passage. Often (though not always) they can't do it. I suspect part of it is that they got into the habit of deputizing “understanding" to AI. But here’s the kick: nobody can understand things for you. There. Is. No. Shortcut.
(While the above is based on my personal observations in a classroom setting, there is already systematic research supporting the same conclusion: AI undermines critical thinking.)
