We, the symbolic capitalists, have provided a defensive layer between CEOs and public accountability. We have produced the ESG scores, the stakeholder engagement frameworks, the corporate values statements, and the DEI programs. The entire apparatus that allowed CEOs to claim they were serving society while paying themselves 285 times the median worker was created and reinforced by us. It’s also likely no coincidence that we focused on climate change targets and reporting frameworks rather than worker rights, and on positive messaging at conferences rather than on the structures that allow corporations to influence the political system in their favor. We bear more than a little responsibility for inequality, too. It is tempting to think that all societal problems would be resolved by taxing billionaires out of existence. But, it is not supported by the facts.
