Cancer is a good example of how badly headlines can mislead. Yes, the total number of cancer deaths in the world have risen since 1980, but that mostly reflects population growth and ageing. Once you adjust for age, cancer death rates have fallen by more than 20%.

In the United States, seven in ten people now survive their cancer for at least five years. It’s still the same, awful, horrible disease - but the odds are very different these days.
