The eastern barred bandicoot, once extinct in the wild, is being reintroduced in Australia using a ‘genetic rescue’ approach that mixes mainland and Tasmanian populations. Conservationists aim to establish at least 500 animals across five sites; last week, 100 of them were released onto Australia’s Phillip Island.
