Spending a lot of time looking for a new rental in Evanston.

Not a single one of these new builds in Evanston (Tapestry Station, AMLI Evanston, The Main) have floorplans suitable for a family of three. They are so bedroom/bathroom-heavy with so little common space in these apartments.

I know it’s not cool but as the City considers going nuts into housing development maybe we should encourage development of properties suitable for children. All of these new buildings are optimized for DINKs, empty nesters, or Northwestern students. You should be able to have a family of three in a 2 bedroom apartment - but these are just too small.

I realize some YIMBY is going to come yell at me about this, that the intent is to build these so empty nesters leave the nest and single family homes are cheaper. But it’s a million bucks for a single family home in Evanston and they’re being bought by other empty nesters and underutilized! That policy isn’t working - these apartments are all sitting empty.

I just have to hope I can get lucky and find another vintage apartment (built during a time when they built space for children) before the next landlord hikes up the rents so they can sell the property to developers.
